This home was designed with a very clear goal: to create a beautiful home where the homeowners could comfortably and safely live for years to come, while still having plenty of space for their children and grandchildren to stay close. Our aging-in-place experience became an important part of the planning process, allowing us to think beyond their needs today and anticipate how the home could support them in the future.
Nearly everything the homeowners need for daily living is on the main floor, including two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, laundry, a library and dining room. An elevator connects all three levels, while curbless showers, a walk-in tub, bidet toilets and thoughtfully placed grab bars wherever additional support may be needed make everyday living safer and more accessible.
Safety was considered in the smaller details as well. Motion-activated toe-kick lighting at the cabinetry, hallway lighting and illuminated stair treads provide added visibility at night. Two handrails were installed on the stairways to provide additional stability and security should the homeowners choose to use the stairs rather than the elevator. These features are intentionally integrated into the design so the home feels residential and beautiful rather than institutional.
The other levels were designed around family. Upstairs, two additional bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bath create a private area for children and grandchildren. The lower level adds two more bedrooms along with its own kitchen and living area, giving extended family space to stay and gather while still having privacy. Oversized egress wells bring an unexpected amount of natural light into the lower level and make it feel like a true extension of the home.
The architecture and interiors are intentionally timeless and welcoming, proving that aging-in-place design doesn’t have to look or feel like accessible design. The best solutions are often the ones you barely notice because they were thoughtfully incorporated from the beginning.
This is a home designed not only for aging in place, but for family to remain part of everyday life. It gives the homeowners independence, comfort and security for the future while creating a place where multiple generations can continue to come together for years to come.
