This Edina home proves that modern architecture can still be warm, comfortable and designed completely around family life. Strong rooflines, black-framed windows and a mix of white and charcoal siding give the exterior its contemporary character, while the different forms and materials keep it interesting from every angle.

The entry immediately sets the tone. A dramatic angled metal canopy appears to float above the front door, supported by a simple exposed concrete column. Floor-to-ceiling glass brings natural light into the entry and creates a strong connection between the architecture inside and out.

Large windows are a defining feature throughout the home, including the soaring vertical windows that follow the height of the house and fill the interior with natural light. The rear elevation is just as thoughtfully designed, with multiple connections to the yard and outdoor gathering spaces that allow the family to easily move between inside and out.

What we love most about this home is that it challenges the idea that modern has to mean stark or impractical. Behind the bold architecture is a home designed for real family life—with comfortable gathering spaces, plenty of natural light, a strong connection to the outdoors and spaces that can handle the everyday activity of a busy household.

Modern doesn’t have to sacrifice function or comfort. This home was designed to have all three.
