Built on a small Edina lot, this home shows how thoughtful architecture can create character and generous living spaces even when the property itself is tight. The traditional exterior combines natural stone, shake siding, steep gables, shutters and warm wood details for a home that feels established and timeless.
Inside, extensive millwork carries throughout both the main and upper floors, giving the home much of its personality. Rather than relying on oversized rooms, architectural details and carefully planned spaces create a sense of craftsmanship and warmth throughout the home.
One of the most creative solutions to the narrow lot is the four-season library positioned above the driveway leading to the rear garage. Building over the drive allowed us to capture valuable square footage without increasing the home’s footprint. Surrounded by windows, the library became a charming retreat that feels tucked away from the rest of the house.
A second four-season room at the back of the home creates a natural transition to the yard. Natural stone flooring gives the room a more garden-like feel and provides a durable connection between indoors and out, making it a space that can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.
This home is a great example of designing to the property rather than being limited by it. Every part of the small lot was considered, resulting in a traditional home filled with millwork, architectural character and unexpected spaces that make it feel much larger and more special than its footprint might suggest.
